Thailand

Thailand is well known for its pristine beaches. But there is so much more to this beautiful country, you’ll find ancient temples, National parks, hills rich tribal cultures. There are also the cities like Bangkok which provide great Thai food in restaurants and the street markets. I enjoyed 10days in Thailand, not sure I would go back but it was beautiful.

Best Time to Visit

The climate varies throughout Thailand, you can visit all year round. The best time to travel is during the cool and dry season between November and early April

Things to do and see

  1. Phi Phi Islands can be visited from Krabi or Phuket island by boat, the islands are beautiful and have been the location for many films including James bond. Worth the visit to relax for the day or a few days.
  2. The Grand Place was the official residence of all the kings of Siam, his court and royal government since 1782 until 1925. The palace is now a tourist attraction and a great way to spend a few hours in Bangkok.
  3. The Golden Triangle is the point where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet, connected by the joining rivers Mekong and Ruak.
  4. Hill tribe Villages there are several tribes in the North of Thailand, Akha and Karen are among two of the tribes, you can spend a day or a few days with a local family in the tribe learning about their culture.

Food

Thai cuisine is one of the highlights of travelling to Thailand. The best food is often street food. Tai food is a mixture of tribal cooking combined with the North spice trade. The staple foods are rice mixed with a hot Thai curry, not every dish is spicy, but most are.

Air: There are direct flights from London to Thailand. Domestic airlines are Thai airways, Bangkok air and Nok air.

Roads: All major roads in Thailand are paved and well maintained.

Rail: The rail service links all the major cities apart from Phuket. There are several long-distance services on route each day.

Taxi: Taxis are cheap but a hassle to find during rush hour in Bangkok, Tuk Tuks are also very popular throughout the country.

Ferry: Ferry services operate between the mainland and all the major islands. Reduced servers operate during the monsoon season.

Bus: There are many intercity long-distance bus companies, some are basic while others are luxury with air condition. Heavy traffic can make travelling by bus very slow.

10% is the going rate in restaurants. At many hotels and upmarket restaurants 10% service charge will be added to your bill.

Social etiquette

If somebody bows towards you with their hands together, known as a ‘wai’ it is polite to do the same back. If visiting a local person’s house always take off your shoes before entering. Thai people are tolerant of most western behaviour, if it does not insult their monarchy or religion. It is important to dress respectfully when visiting religious sites. Remove shoes and hats before entering a religious building. If you visit the hill tribes and wish to take photos, they will expect a donation. You should always ask permission before taking a photograph.
