Panama

I flew into Panama from Miami, which was a short 2hr flight. My time in Panama was spent exploring the Panama Canal and the San Blas Islands and the small villages a few hours outside of Panama City. I would love to go back to panama to explore more of the San Blas Islands

Best Time to Visit

You can travel to Panama all year round, but the dry season runs between January and mid-April and is considered the time to see Panama at its best.

Things to do and see

  1. Panama Canal can be explored on a small vessel that will travel through the three set of locks that make up the Canal
  2. San Blas Islands is one of the most popular trips to make in Panama, visiting the islands indigenous people. The inhabitants of the Island live a very traditional lifestyle. Many tourists explore the islands for a few weeks.
  3. Embera Village is inhabited by one of Panamas indigenous groups. As part of on 8hr tour you can visit and have dinner with the tribe and learn about their traditional lifestyle.

Food

White rice with fried plantains is a staple part of restaurant menus and it is usually accompanied by meat, chicken or fish. Ceviche is also very popular.

Transportation

Air: There are no direct flights from London to Panama. Copa Airlines and Air Panama operate domestic flights.

Roads: The roads in and around Panama are well maintained and paved. Drivers drive on the right hand-side of the road.

Rail: The Panama Canal railway company operates a scenic route from Panama City to Colon.

Taxi: The taxis in Panama City are metered, but out of Panama City they are not metered, and prices should be negotiated before starting your ride. The driver may pick up other passengers unless you have paid for a private taxi.

Ferry: There is a Ferry service that connects Panama with Colombia. And there are boat services that connect Panama to the San Blas Islands.

Bus: There are many bus companies operating in Panama, all leaving from Albrook bus terminal. You can buy your ticket at the terminal or on the bus.

Visa

Visas are not required by all EU, U.S, Canadian and Australian nationals for stays up to 180 days.

Language

Spanish is the official language, but English is also widely spoken.

Money

The official currency in Panama is balboa (PAB). Panama doesn’t issue paper money therefore US dollar banknotes are used exclusively. Credit cards are accepted in most places but having a supply of U.S Dollars in more rural areas is a good idea. There are ATMs in most tourist areas. ATMs also give out US dollars.

Tipping

Tipping is not necessary.

High speed internet is available in all major cities. There are also lots of internet cafes in the big cities.
