Nicaragua

I travelled into Nicaragua by bus from Honduras, most of my time in Nicaragua was spent climbing volcanos mostly in Leon which is a beautiful town, not as commercialised as other parts of the country. I hope this short summary of Nicaragua will help you plan your trip.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit depends on the region you are visiting. The climate is tropical for most of the region, making it hot all year round. The dry season is from December to May making it an ideal time to visit. The rain season is from June to November. On the pacific side the rain season is from May to November. The best time to visit depends on the region.

Things to do and see

Cerro Negro is an active volcano in Nicaragua, many tourist hikes, and then sandboard down the volcano.

  1. San Ramon Waterfall is scenic and worth the jungle hike to swim under this beautiful waterfall.
  2. Lake Apanas is a reservoir in the north of Nicaragua, worth the visit for its scenic views.
  3. Telica Volcano is one of the groups of Volcanos in Nicaragua which are popular amongst tourist to hike. FB_IMG_1509188198513

Food

Typical dish in Nicaragua is rice and beans, which sometimes includes grilled beef or chicken. The Atlantic coastlines have influences from the Caribbean, in many dishes.

Transportation

Air: There are no direct flights from London to Nicaragua. La Costena Airlines offer domestic flights from Managua to a few destinations around Nicaragua.

Roads: The Pan American high way and the main roads connecting all the major cities are well maintained. Other roads can have pot holes and are difficult to drive during the wet season. Drivers drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Rail: There is no passenger rail service available.

Taxi: There are metered and un metered taxis, negotiate a price before starting your ride.

Ferry: There is two weekly services that travel between Bluefields and the corn Islands. There is also a service between Granada to Ometepe Islands.

Bus: Most locals travel by bus and its usually the old U.S yellow school buses, there is also a minibus used which can be more comfortable but more expensive. You can buy the minibus ticket in advance from the bus terminal.

Visa

Visas are not required by all EU, U.S, Canadian and Australian nationals for stays up to 90 days.

Language

Spanish is the official language, but English is also widely spoken in certain areas that are predominantly African.

Money

The official currency in Nicaragua is the Gold Cordoba (NIO) Credit cards are accepted in most places but having a supply of local currency in more rural areas is a good idea. There are ATMs in most tourist areas. Most ATMs also give out US dollars.

Tipping

It is common to be expected to tip the service you receive whilst eating in a restaurant. A tip of around 10% is acceptable for good service.

Social etiquette

75% of the country is Roman Catholic. Ask permission before taking photographs.

High speed internet is available in all major cities. There are also lots of internet cafes in the big cities.
