Greece

With ancient ruin sites scattered all over Greece like the Parthenon temple and the paradise Islands of Mykonos and Santorini, there is so much to do and explore for every type of traveller. I have visited Greece several times and would love to go back to explore more of the Islands. I hope this short summary of Greece will help you plan your trip.

Best Time to Visit

In the North and costal areas of Greece the summers are hot in the evening there is a cool breeze. Athens can be slightly hotter in the summers with temperatures going over 40degrees. Winters are mild in the South but much colder in the North of Greece. Spring and Autumn are an ideal time to visit most parts of Greece the days are sunny but not that hot.

Things to do and see

  1. Acropolis of Athens is a UNESCO listed site that contains the remains of several ancient buildings like the Propylaea gateway, the ruins of Parthenon and many more. Exploring the ancient sites is a great way to spend a few hours in Athens.
  2. Santorini Island is one of Greece beautiful Islands, unique for its white and blue houses. While on the Island you can visit the Volcanic Red Beach, Oia Village, a winery and Akrotiri Archaeological site. It’s a small Island with many activities to keep you busy.
  3. Delphi in 6th century Greece was the religious centre and a sign of the unity of Greece the site is worth visiting when in Greece.

Food

Greek dishes use a variety vegetables, fish and meat bread and Yoghurt are also staples in Greek dishes, other ingredients include olives, olive oil and garlic. There are many international restaurants especially in the big cities.

Transportation

Air: There are direct 3hrs 40mins flights from London to Greece. Domestic flights are operated by Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airlines.

Roads: The roads in Greece are well maintained, however many roads in rural areas are narrow and poorly surfaced. Drivers drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Rail: Athens has one main rail service that connects most of the City. There is also an international rail service that connects Athens to the rest of Europe.

Taxi: Uber is available in Greece there are also metered taxis.

Ferry: It is easy and cheap to travel to all the Islands connected to Greece. The main ports in Greece are Attica and Piraeus.

Bus: All of Greece is connected by long distance buses, the popular routes are Athens to Thessaloniki and Athens to Patras.

Visa

Visas are not required for all EU, U.S, Canadian and Australian nationals for stays of up to 90days over a 6month period.

Language

The official language spoken in Greece is Greek. English is also Widely spoken in the tourist areas.

Money

The official currency in Greece is the Euro. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at ATM machines and in restaurants and shops.

Tipping

Tipping a small amount, not necessarily a percentage is expected.

Social etiquette

98% of the country is Greek Orthodox.
