Denmark

I have been to Denmark a few times mostly to Copenhagen. I love the colourful waterside houses, the boats on the canals and the Scandinavian food, there are many great restaurants and bars in Copenhagen. When in Copenhagen the best way to see the city is by bike especially in the summer. I hope this short summary of Denmark will help you plan your trip.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is during the summer months from June to August. Winter is from December to March and tends to be dark with a lot of rain.

Things to do and see

  1. Copenhagen Canal can be viewed by boat within 1hr you can view the whole canal. Including the iconic Little Mermaid Statue.
  2. Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park in Copenhagen, a fun way to spend a few hours in Denmark.
  3. Frederiksborg Castle is a 400-year-old castle in the town of Hillerod, visiting the castle will allow you to learn about Danish Royalty and culture. There is also a renaissance art collection to enjoy.
  4. National Aquarium Denmark is a great place to spend an afternoon in copenhagen.

Food

Fish is an important part of Danish dishes. There are also many chain international restaurants in Denmark from all over the world and many great vegan restaurants.

Transportation

Air: There are direct 2hr flights from London to Denmark for under £30 return. There are also domestic flights which connect the whole country.

Roads: The roads in Denmark are well maintained, drivers drive on the right-hand side of the road. There are many cycle lanes in the city and the country side.

Rail: The main cities on all Islands are connected by rail. You can also travel international by rail and buy an InterRail One Country Pass. There is also a Metro service in Denmark that runs 24hrs and 7days a week.

Taxi: Uber is available in Denmark there are also metered taxis.

Ferry: There are regular ferry services connecting all of Denmark. The larger ferry’s usually have restaurants.

Bus: The A buses are the main buses used in Copenhagen. They operate between 7-9am in the morning and 15:30 to 17:30 in the afternoon. The S buses are faster then the A Buses and operate from 6am in the morning to 01:00 at night. Then you have night buses from 01:00 to 5am in the morning.

Visa

Visas are not required for all EU, U.S, Canadian and Australian nationals for stays of up to 90days over a 6month period.

Language

The official languages spoken is Danish, many people also speak German, French and English.

Money

The official currency in Denmark is the Danish Krone (DKK) There are plenty of ATMs throughout Denmark. Foreign credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants.

Tipping

Tipping is not necessary as it often included in the bill.

Social etiquette

Smoking is banned in all pubic areas except for bars smaller than 40 sq meters.
