Africa is in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, and the second largest continent in the world. The continent is surrounded by two oceans, the Atlantic to the West and the Indian to the Southeast. To the North of Africa is the Mediterranean Sea and in the Northwest lies the red Sea. Africa has 300 different ethnic groups and speaks 2000 languages making the continent of Africa the most diverse in the world. Eastern Africa is believed to be the origin of the first humans, the oldest modern human bones were found in Ethiopia in 1974. Africa contains 54 sovereign states of which I have visited 12. Africa is a continent of extreme beauty not just for its wildlife and picturesque savannahs but the myriad cultures, dramatic landscapes and countless stunning beaches. While travelling Southern Africa by bus I found the experience to be safe, cheap and straightforward; I look forward to one day, returning and exploring more of the continent.
